Full Description

Former school building. T-shape plan red brick building in mixed bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Large window opening on east gable with polychromatic brick arches. Windows on the south elevation have large decorative hood moulds. Dentil course at eaves height. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory mentions two former schools in the parish, Porrill's and Cowell's, which were combined to create a single endowment. One of the nearby bedehouses (MLI92639) was reserved for the use of the teacher. {2} The building can be seen in the same plan form on both the 1889 and 1905 OS maps of Benington. The flat roofed extensions to the rear appaer to be 20th century additions. {3}{4}
