Full Description

Former school. Single storey rectangular plan buff brick building in English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Two small gabled porches on the west elevation, with decorative bargeboards and simple wooden finials. Both porches have painted hood moulds above the door openings and two infilled door openings. Two tall gable stacks. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the National School was built in 1842 and was attended at the time by about 50 children. In 1872 it was attended by about 40 children. {2}{3} Discussions regarding the closure of the school, in line with Lindsey County Council Education Committee's policy towards small village schools, were underway in the early 1960s. The school remained open until at least the end of the decade when it was agreed that children from Skendleby were to be transferred to the new school at Partney once it was constructed. {4}{5} The exact date of the school's closure is unclear.
