Full Description
Former school building. One and two storey red brick building in a T-shape cross-wing plan form, under a pitched gabled tile roof. The two northeast-southwest aligned wings are single storey with projections to the southeast, which were most likely originally used as cloakrooms for the two classrooms. The central northeast to southwest aligned two storey wing originally had a small porch to the southwest, though this has been demolished. It also has two narrow lateral stacks, one abutting each of the cross-wings. It is possible that this central range was used as a school hall, with schoolmaster's accomodation above. Aside from the demolished porch, the building maintains a similar plan form as that seen on the 1905 OS map of Wainfleet St Mary. {1}{2}
White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the school was founded as a Free School, and was erected in 1831 by the governers of Bethlem Hospital. {3}
The school was closed in 1987 and has since been converted into flats. {4}
