Full Description
19th century school building. One and a half/two storey red brick building in English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. One large ridge stack. Gables have decorative bargeboards. Ashlar door and window dressings. Two-tiered red brick buttresses on the front elevation, two of which have been rebuilt in sympathetic style, replacing modern windows. A large modern window towards the south of the front elevation has also been replaced by an ashlar dressed window in matching style to the original windows. There is a datestone above the door inscribed '1860'. The two storey wing to the north is likely to have been the house built for the schoolmaster, and is now in use as a private residence. A number of modern classrooms have been added to the rear of the building in the 20th and 21st centuries. {1}
White's 1856 Trade Directory states that a school in the parish was attended by 90 pupils. It was built in 1815, with a house for the master. It is unclear if this refers to the current school building. (2)
White's 1872 Directory states that Friskney had at the time four church schools in the parish: a boys', a girls', and two infants' schools, with a total capacity of 285 pupils. The infants' schools were located at Eaudyke and Fen. {3}
