Full Description

19th century school building with probable schoolmaster's house. One and two storey cross-wing plan brick building in English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. The cross-gable on the front elevation has decorative chequerboard patterned brickwork, with a fleur-de-lis finial above, and brick corbelling on the gable shoulders. On the southern elevation, the apparatus for the school bell is still in place, though the bell has been removed. Below this is a window opening, infilled and half covered by single storey modern extensions. The two storey range attached to the northern end of the schoolroom was likely used as a teacher's residence. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the school was, at the time, attended by around 80 pupils. {2} It is unclear when the school was founded.
