Full Description

Former school building. One and two storey buff brick building in English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. The building consists of a single storey L-plan schoolhouse with a two storey range attached, likely originally the schoolmaster's accommodation. Front elevation has three segmental arch windows with bullnose brick lintels, with a modern gabled porch to the left. Above the porch and partially obscured by it is a stone plaque inscribed 'GIRLS SCHOOL'. One ridge and one lateral stack. {1} The building is shown in its current plan form on the 1905 OS map of Stickford. {2} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the village had a Free School. By 1872 that school was closed pending improvements to bring it in line with the Education Act 1870. {3}{4} It is unclear when the building ceased to be used as a school.
