Former Free School. One and a half storey red brick building in English Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. The building has undergone several phases of alteration. An extension to the south gable end of the single range was constructed at some point in the 1890s or early 1900s. The roof was replaced between 2011 and 2021 and the single gabled dormer was removed. During the same period one of the window openings was partially infilled and replaced with a double garage door. {1}{2}{3} A schoolmaster's house (MLI126560) sits within the same curtilage. White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the school was founded in 1719 by Gregory Croft, who endowed it with 20 acres and 12 perches of land at Stickney to provide an income for the school. He also donated the original school and master's house and garden. The 1872 Trade Directory suggests that it was proposed to build a new school building 'suitable to meet te growing requirements of the population'. {4}{5} The school was closed in August 1989, after attendance numbers had declined to 19 pupils and were due to decline further in the next few years. {6}{7}
