Full Description

School building and former schoolmaster's house dating to the mid 19th century. One and a half and two storey red brick building in Flemish Bond with decorative blue brick diapering, under a pitched gabled tile roof. Two ridge stacks. The school bell apparatus is still in place over western gable end, though the bell has been removed. Black painted brick hood moulds above the window and door openings. A dedication plaque on the street-facing cross-gable has the inscription 'THIS SCHOOL WAS BUILT BY T. WATSON ESQ. OF BITTESWELL 1859'. A number of modern brick school buildings have been added to the site. {1} The 1906 OS map of the village shows the school in a similar plan form, though a small range to the northwest appears to have been demolished in the 20th century. {2} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the school and schoolmaster's house were built in 1859 at a cost of £630, paid for by Thomas Watson of Bitteswell, Leicestershire. In 1872 it was attended by around 50 pupils. {3}
