Full Description

Former school building. Single storey brick building in English Bond and English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Signs of multiple phases of alteration. The northern east-west aligned range, visible on the 1906 OS map, appears to have been demolished, and the porch appears to have been demolished and rebuilt more centrally on the street-facing range. The gable ends have black painted bargeboards and finials. A dedication plaque on the cross-wing gable end reads 'Scremby National School […] 1846 by the Rn. Henry Brackenbury.' Door and window openings are bullnosed and have brick hood moulds. One ridge stack. {1}{2} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the school was built in 1846, at the expense of the rector (Henry Brackenbury) and supported solely by him. {3} The school was forced to send senior children to Spilsby C.E. School from 1938 because of overcrowding. {4} By 1961 the school had only 11 children attending, did not have a playground and had no potential to be expanded or improved, and as such was in danger of closing. Lindsey Education Committee gave notice in July 1961 that the school was no longer to be maintaned . {5}{6} The school appears to have stayed open until at least 1969, when it was reported that the Scremby school managers would contribute to the construction of the new school building at Partney 'when their own school… close(s)'. The intention was for children from Scremby to be sent to this new school. It is assumed that the school was closed soon after this, but the exact date of closure is unknown. {7}
