Full Description

Former school building, partially demolished and rebuilt as flats. Only the rear range and foundations of the front range of the original school building appear to exist. The rear range is built in red brick in Flemish Bond, under a gabled tile roof. The top of the gable end has been rebuilt, suggesting a change in the roof height. There is a dog-tooth dentil course below the eaves. The window openings on the rear elevation appear to have been infilled and replaced with smaller modern uPVC windows. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the National School was built in 1839, and at the time was attended by '60 girls and infants'. {2} The building can be seen on the 1905 OS map of Spilsby, on which it is marked as a school. It comprises an L-shaped front building adjoining a smaller rectangular building. The curtilage is divided into two, presumably to provide separate playgrounds for both sexes. The rear building may have been used as a schoolmaster's house, and a small enclosed area of the curtilage attached to the building may have been a garden for the house. {3}
