Full Description

Site of a National School. White's 1856 Trade Directory states that a National School was built in the village in 1825, for pupils from Burwell, Muckton and Walmsgate. {1} The 1889 OS map shows the building in a rectangular plan with two porches on the southwest elevation. By the time of the 1906 OS map, the school is shown in an L-shape plan form. {2}{3} The school was bought by the Education Authority when the estate was sold in 1911, and was closed in 1941 due to low attendance, with only 11 students attending. It is uncertain when it was demolished. The site is now occupied by modern housing. {4}
