Full Description

Former school. Single storey and western two storey wings are in English Garden Wall Bond, a mix of red brick and buff brick. Red brick central cross-wing range in Common Bond. Slate roofs. Two ridge stacks, two lateral stacks. School bell and apparatus still in situ on the rear cross-gable. One brick outbuilding to the rear. {1} White’s 1856 states that a Free School for Great Carlton, Little Cartlon, and Castle Carlton was built in 1716. The school was rebuilt in 1838 on the same site. {2} The school was still in use in 1966, and closed at some point in the late 20th century. It has since been converted for residential use. {3}
