Full Description
Former school building and likely schoolmaster's house. The school building is an L-shape plan form one and a half storey red brick building in English Bond, under a steeply sloped gabled tile roof. The main range appears to have been rebuilt in Running Bond using polychromatic brick. Three gable-fronted dormers on south elevation, two on west elevation. A flat roofed extension to the rear may be a modern replacement of another range seen on the 1906 OS map of the village. The schoolmaster's house, adjacent to the school, is a two stoery red brick building in English Garden Wall Bond, under a hipped tile roof, with two lateral stacks. Dentil course at eaves height. {1}{2}
A newspaper article from 1953 states that the school was built in 1844 for the children of Tathwell, Haugham, and Raithby parishes, and was enlarged in 1873 and 1907 to increase capacity to 138 pupils. By the date of the article, however, only 32 pupils were attending the school. {3}
Notice was given in 1973 that the Local Education Authority had proposed to cease to maintain the school. It is unclear how soon after this the school was closed. {4}
