Full Description

Neo-gothic orange brick building in Flemish Bond with yellow brick banding, under a steeply pitched gabled roof of slate with a low tower and spire on the south corner. Buttresses at the corners. One tall narrow lateral stack. Neo-gothic pointed arch windows with polychromatic brick surrounds. Yellow brick string course at eaves height. A sympathetic modern brick extension at the north corner of the building provides a new entranceway. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that a National School was built in the village in 1862, at a cost of over £400, and was attended by about 60 pupils. The building appears to have been constructed with the dual purpose of educating children and providing a chapel of ease for Saltfleet. A formal opening for both was held on the 26th June, 1862. {2}{3} The building is shown with the same roughly rectangular plan form on the 1888 and 1907 OS maps of Salfleet, and the modern extension to the north appears to be the only major alteration to the external fabric. {4}{5} It is unclear when the school was closed, though it appears to have gone out of use by November of 1954, when a whist drive was held in the 'Old School'. {6}
