Constructed in 1863 to house the Free Evening School, formerly on Lee Street, at a cost of £1000. By 1868 90 adults and 140 youths were being educated there. Its library, free to the local community, had over 400 volumes. The building can be seen on the 1:500 town plan of Louth, surveyed in 1888 and published the next year. The school closed at some point in the 1880s, and was subsequently used as a drill hall. From around 1910 it was converted into an early cinema. In 1946 the Royal British Legion purchased the building for use as a local headquarters. {2}{3}{4}
