Full Description

Former school building. A two storey cross-wing painted brick building, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. Two gable stacks. Brick plinth. Front gable has wave-pattern decorative bargeboards, string course of red brick or tile with exposed herringbone brickwork and datestone with coat of arms and the date '1894' on gable end above. The front gable has a stone or concrete boot scraper with trefoil arch opening. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the school was built in 1868 and was attended by 42 children. It was funded by the lord of the manor at that time. {2} The school building is shown in its current plan form on the 1888, 1906, and 1951 OS maps of Burgh on Bain.
