Full Description

Former school and schoolmaster's house. The school is a single range, one storey, brick building, rendered and painted white on three sides, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. The gables are parapeted and coped with concrete, with moulded shoulders. Front elevation has three wide buttresses interspersed with six 4 over 2 sash windows, and a blocked entranceway. The schoolmaster's house is a two storey L-shape plan form brick building in English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. This house also has parapeted and coped gables. One ridge stack, one gable stack, one lateral stack.. The southeast gable elevation is rendered. First storey of front elevation built in red and yellow brick, with two 3 light and two 6 light casement windows and an open porch, with a string course above. Second storey is built in buff brick. One wall gable with a three light segmental arch window. {1} White's 1856 Trade Directory notes that the school was built by subscriptio in 1825, replacing a previous school in the parish, and catered for the eductation of children from the parishes of Stainton and Barlings. {2} The building is shown on the 1887, 1906 and 1950 OS maps in its current plan form. {3}{4}{5}
