Full Description

A 13th-14th century roof tile kiln was discovered in York Street, Boston in 1961. It had triple parallel flues and was in operation between 1270 and 1350. Associated pottery included decorated jugs of Toynton type. A heap of tiles lay nearby, also the remains of a more primitive kiln. Slight traces of another larger building were seen and nearby are the remains of a still earlier kiln. The find was made and the site excavated by P. Mayes, when he was constructing a replica of a Roman kiln. {1}{2}{3}{4} The filled excavation trenches are visible at TF 3336 4396. Fragmentary medieval brick, tile and pottery were found on the surface. The Guildhall Museum in Boston holds a representative collection of finds from this site. {5}{6}
