Full Description
Roman Catholic Church built in 1824 by architect E. J. Wilson. It was partially rebuilt and enlarged in 1867 at the expense of Thomas Arthur Young of Kingerby Hall, reopening a year later. The nave and aisle roofs were replaced by a simple single span roof in 1980 due to decaying timbers. The remaining west wall of the 1824 church is of yellow brick in Flemish Bond, with three round arched windows, with a lunette window above. The elements of the church rebuilt in 1867 were constructed in red brick in Flemish Bond with blue brick arches and bands. The south elevation includes a large round arched entranceway with polychromatic detailing in the arch, and a three-tiered saddleback roofed tower in the southwest corner. To the east are a presbytery (MLI126462) and Sunday School/Chapel (MLI126463) associated with the church. For a full, detailed description of the church and its interior furnishings, please refer to the entry for this church on the ‘Taking Stock’ website. {1}{2}{3}
White’s 1872 Trade Directory gives the date of the rebuilding incorrectly as 1869, and notes that the alterations cost £2500. White also notes that the church contains several fine paintings and examples of stained glass. {4}
