Full Description

The Corporation Baths in Boston were opened in 1880, to add formal changing faciilities for the larger bathing and recreation ground here (see MLI126458). The baths provided access to a number of adjacent outdoor swimming pools, some of which were covered and heated. When first opened, the pools were advertised as being open 'daylight to dark' for women on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and for men the rest of the week. Adults were charged 6d for entry. {1}{2} The Corporation Baths were home to the Boston Amateur Swimming Club, who held an annual gala and regular swimming competitons in the early 20th century. The baths continued in use until at least 1963, but are thought to have been closed shortly afterwards (before 1970), with the remaing pools on the site being demolished. {3}{4} The former entrance block and changing facilities of the Corporation Baths still survive, and are thought to be in use as a private dwelling. The building is constructed of buff brick with red brick dressings. The front (north-eastern) elevation comprises a central, two-storey double bay, which protrudes slightly from the two flaking single-storey ranges to the north-west and south-east. The slate covered roofs are a mixture of hipped and pitched design. {5}
