Full Description

An 18th century coaching inn, later hotel, with services to London and other parts of the country. It was demolished in the second half of the 20th century. The main building has a rectangular plan and is three storeys high with an attic; the façade is divided in five bays and has stone quoining. The pitched roof is flanked by brick gable stacks. As well as the main building, there were outbuildings and a courtyard to the back. The Peacock bowling club, associated with the hotel, was established in 1860 and was one of the oldest bowling clubs in the country. The hotel and the adjoining building have since been replaced by a mid-late 20th century brick building with shop frontages. {1}{2}{3}
