Full Description
Former school and village hall, destroyed by fire and subsequently demolished. The building was constructed of red brick, under a pitched gabled roof of slate. The schoolroom, later the village hall, was a one and a half storey cross-wing building with a large simple dormer on the front elevation containing a small circular window. The western gable elevation had a large arched window opening, partially infilled by the time of the fire. There is a small flat roofed single storey wing to the rear of the building, possibly used a kitchen. The attached schoolmaster's house, later used as a scout hut, was a two storey cross-wing building, with one gable stack on the rear range. The front gable elevation had three window openings with stone lintels and sills with decorative brick arches above. {1}{2}
The 1950 OS map of the village shows the building in the same plan form as the 1905 map, and it appears to still have been in use as a school at that time. {3}
White's 1856 Trade Directory states that a parish school was built in the village in 1839. The 1872 Directory states that this school was sold in 1860, and a new school was built at cost of £560. {4}{5}
A new village hall stands on the site of the old hall. It was constructed in 2005, after the old hall was destroyed in a fire in April 2002. There is also a new scout hut on the site. {6}{7}
