Full Description
The buildings that used to be located in the Market Place, just south of St Botolph's Church, included shops, the gaol and the Ostrach Inn. These buildings had been located here since at least the mid-16th century and would have closed off what was probably part of the medieval open Market Place. The buildings formed a two and half storey high complex with a pitched roof with dormers and overhand to the cross-wing. The gaol was first established here at some point between 1552 and 1572, it was located in the southeastern part of the complex of buildings. The Ostrich Inn was located in the northwestern part of the complex and was first recorded in 1560 but is possibly earlier. The buildings were demolished in the late 18th century after Mr. John Parish ceded the inn and adjoining houses and shops to St Botolph's Church, so as to expand their churchyard. This was done on the condition that the town Corporation would do the same with the gaol and two shops. The demolition of the buildings and extension of the churchyard were not finalised until 1781. {1}{2}
