Full Description

Former school. Two storey yellow brick in English Garden Wall Bond, under a steeply pitched roof of slate. Coped gables with moulded shoulders. One wall stack on the front elevation. The western gable has a large pointed arch window opening, now partially infilled with modern uPVC windows below. Red brick plinth, window surrounds, and quoins. There are a pair of single storey flat roofed red brick extensions to the rear of the building, on the southwest and southeast corners. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory notes that the school was built as a Church school, in 1864, at a cost of £350. By 1872 it was attended by about 60 children of both sexes. {2} On the 1906 OS map the school is shown in the same T-shape plan form, and the only change to the building's exterior appears to be the addition of the red brick extensions to the rear. {3}{4}
