Full Description

A former boys' school. Originally comprising two buildings, now only the eastern building remains. It is approximately square in plan, and is of red brick construction with buff brick window decoration. It has undergone siginifant alteration, with most of the original windows infilled and smaller modern uPVC windows installed. {1}{2} One of two Charity Schools providing education to poor children in Gainsborough in the 19th century, the other being the girls' school on the corner of Church Street and Acland Street (MLI125391). By 1856 both schools were being run on the National Schools system, and were attended by 100 boys and 80 girls respectively. The schools were supported by subscription and by the Wharton's and Mott's charities. {3}
