Full Description
Public House. Large seven bay, two range, building in an irregular T-plan form. Painted and pebbledashed, under a hipped pantile roof. One ridge stack, one large lateral stack on front range, one ridge stack on rear range. Two canted bay windows, some historic sash windows, some replaced with modern casement windows. In the 19th century, an L-shaped series of outbuildings formed an open courtyard to the rear of the pub, though the rear range has since been demolished. White's 1856 Trade Directory lists James Remington as 'victualler' and brewer at the White Hart, and the 1872 Directory lists Mrs Mahelah Marshall as 'victualler'. {1}{2}{3}{4}
The White Hart also has links to Tennyson. It was also the meeting place in the 18th and early 19th century of the Tetford Club, which included Tennyson and all the local gentry, and attracted famous visitors including Samuel Johnson in 1764. There is an epic poem Tetford Club by one of the members, Langhorne Burton, which describes how at the inn they played skittles, bowls, and enjoyed “the thoughtful pipe and wit-inspiring bowl.” Several books also say that there is “an oak settle Tennyson reputedly used displayed in the bar”. {5}
