Full Description

Public House. One and a half storey stone building, under a steeply pitched gabled slate roof. Original cross-bay T-shape plan form has been extended with the addition of two gabled ranges to the rear. One small concrete gable stack, probably a modern replacement of an earlier stone stack. Small dressed stone quoins on the corners. Two flat dormers on front elevation. Windows are a mix of 4x4 casement and casement with transom, with stone sills and wooden lintels. One dressed stone buttress on front elevation. There are two outbuildings on the site on the 1905 OS Map, one of which is extant and has been extended to form an L-shape plan. A large blocked entranceway can be seen on the southwest elevation. White's 1856 Trade Directory names William Sharp as 'victualler' at the Royal Oak, and the 1872 Directory names Philip Tirrell. {1}{2}{3}{4}
