Full Description

Public House. Two storey brick building in Flemish Bond, under a pitched gabled slate roof. Two gable stacks. Windows and doors are replacements, including moulded concrete lintels and sills. Two ranges of outbuildings to the rear form a U-shaped courtyard with the main building, open to the southeast. The northern range of outbuildings includes stables and a cartshed, likely originally belonging to the neighbouring farmstead but now used as garages for the pub. White's 1856 Trade Directory names William Fowler as 'victualler' at the Welby Arms, and the 1872 Directory names William Neale. The pub's name comes from that of the Welby family, the local landowners in the 19th century. {1}{2}{3}{4}
