Full Description
The site of the former Stone Hall manor house is marked on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The site of the house is depicted as being surrounded by a roughly rectangular moat, still visible to the map surveyors as earthworks. The site has since been ploughed out, and no remains of the hall appear to survive. The Lord of the Manor was the Lord Willoughby de Broke. {1}{2}{3}
The surrounding moat can be clearly discerned as cropmarks on aerial photographs taken of the site in 1960. {4}
Sherds of medieval pottery were found in this area in 1966-8. The assemblage included some unusual black gritty sherds, others of shell-gritted type and other medieval types. {5}
Further field walking conducted on the site in 1977 identified vast amounts of medieval pottery, including early medieval gritty wares and a bronze pendant or box lid. {6}
