Full Description

A lock for the wet dock at the Port of Boston which was built between 1882 and 1884. The lock is 300 feet long and 50 feet wide, with two pairs of gates at either end. The walls of the lock were built of and braced with Portland cement concrete and embedded with rough blocks of concrete stone from quarries at Sleaford. The walls are faced in Staffordshire blue brickwork blocks. The original timber gates have since been replaced with timber gates with metal sheeting; the footbridges over the gates have also since been altered. Elements of the lock which are probably original include the granite quoins and coping, parts of the mechanism for opening the gates and parts of the furniture, such as the cast iron mushroom moorings, mooring rings and iron bollards. {1}
