Full Description

A smithy and gas works complex is depicted in this location on the 1st edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The depiction shows the main smithy and gas plant building with an adjacent gas holder to the east. The works would have provided a private supply of gas to the Easton Hall Estate buildings, and are thought to have been constructed for Sir Montague Cholmely shortly prior to 1874. The works appear to have been relatively short-lived, and the gasholder is not depicted on historic Ordnance Survey mapping after 1904, suggesting gas production on the site stopped at some point in the early 20th century. The smithy is thought to have continued in use until the mid to late 20th century, and the building survives in good order, complete with the former retort house chimney still present. It has since been converted to use as a private residence, with several extensions thought to have been added in about 2010. {1}{2}{3}
