Full Description

Two large gas holders were formerly located in this site to the east of Maiden Row. They are thought to have been built in 1855, after rising demand for gas prompted a major phase of expansion at the main Louth Gas Works site off Thames Street (see MLI86518). Construction of one of the holders was described as ongoing in 1857, with the structure planned to hold 150,000 feet of gas. It would be comprised of a sheet metal vessel measuring 25ft deep and 87ft 6" in diameter, suspended inside a brickwork tank measuring 26ft deep and 90ft in diameter. Production at the Thames Street site is recorded to have stopped at some point in 1957 or 1958, although the gas holders here were retained until the late 20th century. {1}{2}
