Full Description

During a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at Cock Hill House, No. 7 West End, Burgh le Marsh, a 2nd century cremation urn containing human remains was identified, as well as a potential inhumation burial. The cremation urn was a simple everted rim jar, dated roughly to the second century AD, which had been subjected to heat. The base and lower body were not burnt, suggesting that either the urn had been placed proximal to the pyre when the body was cremated, or that the cremated bone was placed in the urn, which was then placed on a second pyre. The cremated bone fragments inside were assessed but the age or sex could not be determined. To the north of the trench a north-south orientated cut was observed, which extended beyond the limit of the excavation. This may represent an inhumation burial. Its fill contained a single sherd of undiagnostic Roman greyware pottery. A Roman inhumation burial was excavated in the same field in the 1960s, perhaps indicating the site of a burial ground. {1}{2}
