Full Description

Cross O'Cliff Court was built in 1907 for Arthur Cookes Newsum, a prominent Lincoln businessman, councillor and former mayor of the city. The former house is in the Tudor Revival style of the Arts and Crafts movement, although it is uncertain who the architect responsible for the design was. It is of two storeys, with the main entrance facing east, and with wings at the northern and southern ends creating a U-shaped forecourt area. It is built of brick with stone dressings to the windows, doorway and coping of the pitched tile roofs. The building was acquired by the Harmston Hall Colony after the death of Arthur Newsum in 1934, when it was converted to be used as ancillary hostel accommodation for the nearby Harmston Hall Hospital. It remained in institutional usage following the creation of the National Health Service in 1948, when it was absorbed to be used as office space.
