Full Description
A rifle training range was established at Gibraltar Point during the First World War. The range used Mill Hill on the East Dunes as the target area, and had five shooting positions strung out in a line along the marsh. The furthest shooting position was located in the area to the immediate east of the present day Mere, where the 500 yard shooting butt is now lost in reeds. The easiest position to see now is at Square Pond, where a low earthwork bank on the west side of the pond marks the former 300 yard shooting butt.
The rifle range was re-used during the Second World War after Skegness became the site of the RAF's Recruitment Centre No.11. Practising on the range formed part of the eight week schedule of basic training for all new recruits. {1}
