Full Description

Probable 19th century milestone at the Church of St Botolph, Boston. It takes the form of a carved stone post, and is located close to a porch for the church. It is inscribed '100 MILES FROM LONDON'. {1} The milestone was inspected as part of a condition survey of historic milestones in Boston Borough, conducted in early 2020. It was found to be in a relatively poor condition at that time, with quite extensive edge damage and the inscription quite badly faded. Some doubt as to whether the milestone was in its original location was also raised by the surveyors, as the stated miles to London did not seem to be quite accurate. It could be that the milestone has been moved to here from another location, or that the inscription has been mis-read (a distance of about 120 miles would be more accurate). {2}
