Full Description

Milestone of possible 19th century date, on the A52 to the south-east of Swineshead. It is triangular in plan, and made of cast-iron. It is inscribed 'HCC' in the top panel, with 'BOSTON 7 MILES' and 'DONINGTON 3 1/2 MILES' in the respective side panels. {1} The milepost was inspected as part of a condition survey of historic milestones in Boston Borough, conducted in early 2020. It was found to be in a relatively poor condition at that time, with the paint having flaked from most of the surfaces and the post becoming very rusty. {2} The milestone could be clearly discerned on the older Google Street View imagery for this area, but could not be seen on the latest imagery (August 2021). An area of soil disturbance marking where the milestone had stood can clearly be seen, however, indicating the post has likely been very recently removed or destroyed. {3}
