Full Description

The former Smithy building at St George’s Hill, Glentworth, probably existed since at least the 1813 tithe map which depicts a three-sided range of outbuildings. By the late 19th century, the outline of the buildings are clearly visible and the smithy is designated for the first time as a ‘Smithy’. By 1974 the present layout of the range is shown with the two northern outbuildings within the curtilage of 10, St George’s Hill. The former smithy building is no longer designated as a smithy and so may have been converted to its later use as a former joiners workshop. Two site visits was made to the property as part of a building survey in 2021. During these site visits it was noted that there was very little evidence for its former function as a smithy. There were considerable 20th century internal alterations, including the addition of a mezzanine floor and a new ground floor office or store for the adjacent joiners workshop. Otherwise the internal and external fabric of the building was relatively unchanged. A photographic record was also made of the exterior and interior of the building. {1}{2}
