Full Description

The remains of a north-east to south-west aligned ditch and a pit or possible hearth were recorded in this location in January 2018, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for new residential development on land at Mill House Farm, Drove Road, Shepeau Stow. The ditch had a shallow and truncated profile, and was completely ploughed out in places, though continued beyond the limits of the monitored area. The pit was ovular in shape, and extended beyond the northern limit of ground reduction. It contained a fill of burnt or vitrified clay fragments, suggesting a possible function as a hearth or a small rubbish pit. No finds or dating evidence was recovered from the fills of either feature, however, and their exact date and origins remains unknown. {1}{2}
