Full Description
Carriers Cottage was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in November 2017 to inform its proposed conversion to residential use. The building developed over a number of phases, with the earliest part thought to date from the second quarter of the 19th century. This part was at the eastern end of the building, and comprised a former wheelwright's workshop associated with the adjacent Farndon House. Later stable and cart shed rooms were added shortly afterwards, and linked the structure to the adjacent buildings and school house. All of the building is single-storey, and is constructed of red brick, laid in English Garden Wall bond. The roofs are of red clay pantiles, and is hipped to the earlier eastern part, and pitched for the later additions. Mid 19th century graffiti, giving the name of one of the former occupiers of the building, was recorded in the former stable room. {1}{2}
