Full Description

A Second World War air raid shelter, located to the rear of 15 Abbey Road. A brief photographic survey was made of the structure in August 2020, during the excavation of trial trenches to inform proposed proposed residential development on the site. The shelter was built in 1939, with most of the structure partially buried underground and covered by an earthwork mound. Access was via steps on the southern side, with a series of initials and the date 'July 16 1939' carved just inside the entrance doorway likely belonging to the local residents who used the structure. The shelter had been infilled in 1998, but had since been emptied and cleaned by the landowner. {1}{2}
