Full Description

A Roman, copper-alloy knee brooch was found in 2000. The artefact was recovered by a metal detectorist at Alford, although the exact findspot is unknown. Most of the semi-cylindrical spring case was missing, but part of the iron spring survived with the bow plate. The bow was triangular in shape, measuring 29mm long by 13mm wide, and had two panels of letters moulded in relief. The letters would have been surrounded by a background of blue enamel, of which only two spots remained. The lettering read 'FIBVLAEXREG/LAGITIENSE', which was translated as meaning 'Brooch from the Regio Lagitiensis', thought to be Roman Castleford, where an extensive enamelled bronzeware manufactory is believed to have been located. {1}
