Full Description

Foundation courses of a stone-built structure were revealed in this location in October 2020, during digging in the garden by the landowner. The foundations were made of roughly hewn stone blocks, with evidence of a tiled floor having formerly been present inside the structure. The foundations matched the shape of a rectangular structure marked in this location on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map, and are likely the remains of a former outbuilding, sited behind the former dwellings on Blind Lane. The outbuilding is likely to be contemporary with the construction of the adjacent Pinfold house in the 1700s, and is thought to have been extant until the site was cleared in the 1960s. A wide range of post-medieval artefacts was also recovered from midden deposits in close association with the building remains. This assemblage was largely comprised of 19th and early 20th century refuse material, but included occasional fragments of earlier material, including an S-shaped strap fitting that dated to the 18th century. {1}{2}
