Full Description
Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow, to the north-east of Colsterworth. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}
Traces of the ridge and furrow in the southernmost field were recorded in October 2012, during a magnetometry survey conducted to inform proposed residential development on land at Woodlands Drive. The remains were recorded as faint, linear magnetic anomalies, with the majority aligned on a roughly north-west to south-east axis, although smaller, adjacent areas of north-east to south-west aligned anomalies were also recorded, reflecting sub-divisions of the open field system in this area. {2}{3}
Subsequent trial trenching and test pitting conducted in March 2013 recorded further remains of the medieval ridge and furrow, previously identified on land to the north of Woodlands Drive. The remains were found to spread across the whole of the southern field, with the vast majority aligned on the roughly north-west to south-east axis previously identified, although the smaller areas of north-east to south-west aligned furrows were also confirmed. Ridge and furrow was absent from most of the northern field, though this may be due to modern disturbance. {4}{5}
Further traces of ridge and furrow were identified on the Google Maps aerial photographic layer, to the north of those previously identified by the NMP. The remains could be seen as a parallel series of faint, north-west to south-east aligned, linear earthworks. {6}
