Full Description
These former farm buildngs were the subject of a programme of historic buildng recording, conducted in June 2017 to inform proposed alterations and their conversion to holiday lets. The surveyed structures comprise a former threshing barn with an attached cart store with loft. They are thought to date to the mid to late 19th century, and originally formed part of a larger U-shaped complex of agricultural buildings, now mostly demolished. They are of two storeys, being built of red brick laid in English bond with lime mortar. The buildings had a gabled roof covered with modern asbestos and cement sheeting. The cart shed was located at the south-eastern end of the building. It originally had 3 open fronted bays in the north-eastern elevation, but these had been blocked with modern cement blocks. This portion of the building underwent extensive alteration in the mid 20th century, when the roof was raised and a large opening was added in the south-east elevation to accommodate larger, modern farm equipment. The interior of the cart shed is one large room, open to the timber roof structure. There is evidence of former floor joists that could indicate that there was a small loft or granary above the cart shed. The former threshing barn was located at the north-western end of the building. It had 2 large arched entrances on opposing sides of the building, although these were not as wide as is typical for a threshing barn. There may have originally been an exterior staircase on the north-east elevation that would have allowed access to the 1st floor loft, but this had been removed at some point. The ground floor was divided into 2 rooms. The loft was accessed by timber stairs, and was one large, open space. {1}{2}
