Full Description

A fragment from a mid 10th to early 11th century grave cover, was formerly located in the garden of the Old Vicarage at Kirkby Green. The fragment formed part of a larger collection of stonework in the garden, some of which was thought to have come from the Gilbertine priory at Catley. Whilst considerably weathered, the top of the grave cover could be seen to be decorated with an interlaced knot design in low relief. The stone had been re-cut at some point, very likely to allow its re-use as building material. The exact provenance of the grave cover is not known, and it may have been re-used in the construction of Catley Priory, or in the construction of the medieval church at Kirkby Green. {1}
