Full Description
A scatter of Roman artefacts was found in this location in November 2018, during field walking on land to the south of the A52, to the west of Donington. The scatter was comprised of lots of large sherds of grey courseware and smaller bits of colour-coated Nene Valley ware, along with a few sherds in a fine-hard white fabric with a coffee-orange slip. Several bits of Samian ware were also identified, including a small rim piece with two drilled holes to hold a staple or rivet as a repair. The landowner reported that the field had been ploughed from grassland since the late 1960s, and that they had regularly 'fetched up a load of grey pots, most broken but some in very big bits' from this area. {1}
Further scatters of Roman material were noted in this area in April 2020, during a second phase of field walking. The investigation was conducted to inspect two patches of dark soil to both the south and north of the A52 and identified new material in both locations. The dark patches are visible on the ground and on Bing Maps aerial imagery; it was thought likely that the scatter was originally a single site, which had been split by the construction of the modern road. The material identified in 2020 included sherds of mortaria, Samian ware, black burnished ware and fragments of Roman tile and stone. Some further history for the land was provided by the landowner, who mentioned that the area was previously covered with 'lumps and bumps', but that these had been largely levelled since ploughing of the field began after the Second World War. {2}{3}
