Full Description

Site of a medieval hermitage and chapel at Throckenholt, believed to have been in existence from at least 1107 to 1540. The site was granted to the Benedictine Abbey of Thorney by Nigel, Bishop of Ely (1133-69). Abbot Odo of Thorney (1293-1305) decreed that 'the hermitage of Trokenholt should be served by 2 or 3 monks residing there as it used to be'. A chapel built on the site survived until c.1540, when it is shown on a map of Wisbech hundred. The chapel is believed to have been located where the former Throckenholt farmhouse stood, and fragments of stone, bones, and other relics have been uncovered on the site from time to time. {1}{2}{3}
