Full Description

The former stables building at Park House was the subject of a programme of historic building recording and archaeological monitoring, conducted in May 2013 during redevelopment works for the construction of a new swimming pool. The single-storey structure is of likely mid 19th century date and first appears on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County series map from the 1880s. It is of red brick laid in a mix of English Garden Wall and Flemish bond with lime mortar, and features gabled roof of clay pantiles. The western elevation is the primary face of the building and it has double wooden doors and 2 windows. The north and south elevations are blank, although the northern elevation has a small lean-to addition built against it. The eastern elevation has a single wooden door with a segmental brick arch of headers. The interior is divided into two unequal sized rooms, and would have provided stabling and a hayloft for a single hackney pony. The remains of an associated 19th century culvert was recorded during the archaeological monitoring. The culvert was made of corbled red bricks and ran on a north to south alignment, within the foundations and to the immdieate south of the former stable block. {1}{2}{3}
