Full Description
Former pest house, thought to have been built in the late 16th century. The structure was largely rebuilt between 1789 and 1790, and was extended and converted to use as a private residence in about 1880. It is of two-storeys, laid out in a L-shaped plan. The building is mostly constructed of painted red brick, although retains some of the earlier 16th century fabric of coursed rubble stone. The pitched roofs have a natural slate roof covering, thought to date from the 1880 alterations. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
A Historic Building Survey was undertaking in November 2019 to record the exterior and interior of the building. The Pest House (now called "The White Cottage) is a two storey building comprised of coarse limestone and red brick, with a slate tile gable roof, with bay windows and dual redbrick chimneystacks. The upper storey and roof are post-16th century alterations. Evidence of a former doorway is present. The interior of the house shows a two cell floor plan, with many phases of repair evident.
A 1584 lease shows the plot of the house was owned by the Alderman and Burgesses of Grantham, noting is use as a place to isolate infected individuals from the general populace. The Grantham Hall Book recorded in March 1663 that the house should be repaired that year and the next. The 1809 Enclosure Award map for Great Gonerby showes a H-shaped building on the plot of the house. The 1824 Ordinance Survey map shows the building as two seperate rectangular buildings. The building was sold in 1836 to Earl Browlow, who may have began alterating and extensing the building, as a 1838 map shows the building in a T-shape plan. The building's L-shape plan first appears on the OS 1887 map. {2}
